Matthew: Florida State University had the public transportation options that one would expect from an urban campus. I was able to take advantage of the university-operated bus system, which took students across campus and to certain apartment communities. I was also able to take advantage of the municipal bus system, which visited other apartment communities and some shopping centers. I felt safe on campus, due in large part to certain university-operated safety features such as Safe Ridea shuttle service that would pick up students anywhere on campus if they ever felt unsafe while walking at night. Although a car is not at all necessary for attending class, it may be helpful for securing off-campus employment, since many of the nearby job opportunities exist in the surrounding suburbs, which do not have public transportation services. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at Florida State University? Matthew: Since Florida State University is a large, public university, it is often difficult to get one-on-one attention in popular classes, which may have hundreds of students. This is especially true of online classes. In fact, for one of my accounting courses which was only offered online, I needed to provide my professor with more than three weeks of lead time before securing a thirty-minute appointment to review a previous exam. However, it is not impossible to form relationships with professors, especially through school-sponsored organizations. Academic advisers can be just as busy during certain times of the year, and, even if they are available, their advice is extremely depersonalized due to their large work load. Students are largely on their own when it comes to course selection. As with professor availability, there are exceptions to thisI was in the honors program, which provided me with additional advising opportunities, and I found them much more useful than general a dvising. I don't recall having difficulty scheduling appointments with teaching assistants, but many classes do not have them. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Matthew: Florida State University offers a great social experience. I believe that all dorms are suite-style, which means that students do not have to suffer through community restrooms. There were plenty of dining halls, and they were open when I needed them. For students who know they want to become involved in Greek life, they will have no difficulty finding opportunities to do so. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported at Florida State University? Matthew: I felt as though Florida State University had great liberal arts programs, and many of my friends were involved with theatre or music. In the College of Business, it seemed as though the risk management and insurance program, the professional selling program, and the accounting program received a great deal of support and had great job placements. I studied economics and finance, due to my interest in transactional law. I felt supported in my areas of study. I felt most supported through advisers with whom I was connected through my extracurricular involvement. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Matthew: I did not have difficulty making friends at Florida State University. Housing does a great job of facilitating interaction among students in the residence halls, and I made friends with many of the people who lived on my floor. I was also involved with several extracurricular organizations, including a Greek organization. Greek life is prevalent at Florida State University, and students have plenty of opportunities to engage with campus through their fraternity or sorority. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Matthew: The Career Center does a great job, not only helping students find employment, but also helping students get the most out of their Florida State University experience. I worked closely with an Associate Director at the Career Center for much of my experience at Florida State University, who helped me secure a Fortune 100 Internship for the summer of my freshman year (among other opportunities). Reputable companies recruit through the Seminole Futures Career Fair, and I had many friends land top internships early on. However, it seemed as though the recruiters pulled from specific colleges and specific majors from within each college. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges at Florida State University? Matthew: There are several libraries on campus, which have great, newly renovated study areas. However, they are extremely crowded, and it is often difficult to find a place to sit, let alone a space at a computer. If I did not have access to a printer and desktop computer at my apartment complex, I would have missed deadlines on several occasions. This is important to note before coming to Florida State University: one cannot depend on finding space at the library to study or print, especially during midterms and finals week. Describe the surrounding town. Matthew: Students are essentially limited to campus and the surrounding area for access to entertainment and social venues, which are limited compared to other areas of Florida. The only big-name entertainment that comes to the city is arranged by the university around Homecoming, so do not count on being able to go to a stadium concert more than once a semester, if that. However, the university does bring in notable classical artists on a somewhat regular basis. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Matthew: The student body is large. Last I checked, the population, including graduate students, was around 60,000. I was displeased with the typical class size, which often filled auditoriums. However, most of my upper-division classes were delivered in a more personal environment. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Matthew: I greatly enjoyed a business law course which I took during my sophomore year. I was lucky enough to be in an in-person sectionI was one of thirty in-person students, and I believe there were more than 300 online students. The right lung has three lobes namely a superior lobe, a middle lobe and an inferior lobe. The left lungs have two lobes, namely a superior lobe and an inferior lobe. Each lobe is formed of many small lobules. A bronchiole along with its branches and alveoli collectively form a lobule. So, each lobule has many infundibula. Each infundibulum consists of a cluster of alveoli. Alveoli are the structural and functional units of the lungs, and are the centres of gas exchange. (Source: iirliinnaa)Firstly, don’t stay up all night stressing about it. Everyone is in the same boat.You need to relax and wait for your exam to begin. Do your best to relax. A lot of students try to cram a tiny bit more of information into their heads at this point. However, this can just make you more stressed. You have to see what works for you.Make sure you’ve got everything you need for the exam. It’s a good idea to prepare all of this the night before. You don’t want to be running around looking for something on the day of the exam.Component 2: Reading and WritingThis exam lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and will count for 70 marks. The student will be given a couple of Chinese texts which cover similar topics. You’ll have some specific and general questions on your comprehension of the text and will be required to either provide a summary or comparison of the texts.The texts will be fairly recent (from within the last 20 years). Keep in mind that both questions and answers will be in Chinese. Around a quarter of your marks on this paper are for the quality of the language used whereas the rest if for content and, in the last question, your personal response.The very last task r equires you to write about 200 characters and use information ascertained from both the texts provided.Component 3: EssayThis component accounts for 40 marks and lasts an hour and a half. The student will be given a choice of 5 questions from a pre-published list of exam topics.  You then have to write 250-400 characters for the task. In this component, 24 marks are allocated to the quality of the language used and 16 for the content of your answer. This is somewhat different to the previous component where the focus was more on content than the quality of language.So what kind of topics are there?For example, the Cambridge International A Level Chinese topics for 2019 will include Human relationships, law and order, work and leisure, war and peace, and pollution.Component 4: TextsThe fourth component lasts 2 and a half hours and has a total of 75 marks available. You’re given a choice of questions to choose from and you must answer three. The list includes two sections and of you r three questions, at least one text from each must be chosen.The total marks available for each question is 25 and you’re expected to write between 600 and 800 characters for each answer. Be careful not to go over the character limit as you’ll limit the maximum number of marks you can get. Our best advice is to follow the instructions on your paper.How Do You Prepare for a Chinese Exam?If you’re studying at a sixth form or college, your teachers should have given you all the information you’ll need about the date and time of your exam.Have you considered visiting China to improve your Chinese? There won’t be any huge surprises on the day.If you’ve studied Chinese for a while or put the effort in, you’ll probably be more than prepared for the exams. This year, why dont you think about making some test prep resolutions? Here are 5 goals to get you started in 2014:Create a testing schedule for junior and senior year.   You may have heard the adage Failing to plan is planning to fail.   While harsh, this statement is mostly accurate for standardized testing and college admissions.   By now, juniors should have a concrete plan for when theyre going to take the SAT, ACT, and any SAT subject tests.   Its a good idea to complete a full round of testing by the end of junior year, saving the fall of senior year for retakes.   Many students take the SAT in March, the ACT in April, and SAT subject tests in May and June.Look at your PSAT scores and honestly assess your strengths and weaknesses.   By now, most juniors should have received their 2013 PSAT scores.   PSAT scores are a good predictor of SAT pe rformance, so use that data to your advantage!   Adding a zero to the end of a PSAT score gives you the approximate SAT score.   The PSAT score sheet also includes valuable information on your performance in each section for instance, if you aced algebra but struggled with geometry.   And if youre missing a lot of easy questions, watch out for careless mistakes!   Use this information to focus your SAT review on your weaknesses.Consider taking the ACT.   Colleges accept both the SAT and the ACT for admissions purposes.   Most students perform similarly on each test, but some students do much better on the ACT.   The ACT is more straightforward but faster-paced than the SAT.   If youre wondering whether the ACT would be a good fit for you, read more about it here.Decide how youre going to study for the SAT and ACT.   We hope that youll tutor with AJ Tutoring for your standardized tests.   Were proud of our SAT and ACT curriculum and our passionate, professional tutors!   However, ev en if you dont work with us, you should have a plan of attack in place.   Students get into trouble when they assume they can manage this test prep thing on their own, and then put off studying until a couple weeks before the test.   The SAT and ACT are NOT cram tests.   Unlike your tests in school, the SAT and ACT dont require you to store large volumes of information in your short-term memory, only to be forgotten when the test is over.   The SAT and ACT are critical reasoning tests that reward methodical preparation and a strategic approach.Make progress towards your test prep goal every day.   Whether you want to increase your SAT score by 50 points or 500 points, youll only get there through consistent effort.   Goal-achieving gurus (see Jerry Seinfeld, for example) recognize that its not short bursts of sporadic effort that help you achieve your goals its making a little progress every day until it becomes a habit.   You dont need to take a practice SAT every day.   Even doin g a few math problems or reviewing 20 vocabulary words will eventually make a difference.   Consider using apps like Habit Streak or Commit to track your progress with a specific test prep goal.Good luck with achieving your goals in 2014!

Planning For Midterms and Finals BobbiM Mar 31, 2014 Is it that time of year again? Midterms? Finals? Do you want to pull your hair out yet? Here are some tried and true tips to help you do your best. -Plan ahead. Start to rehearse and review your notes and the texts BEFORE exam week so that you can cut down on your workload for the week. Starting early is essential for classes that have cumulative exams because there is so much information to review. -Cut down on work or other commitments. If you work part-time, ask for some time off or for fewer hours at your job and make sure that your family and friends understand that you will be extra busy. Try not to add any new commitments during midterm and final time. -Get enough sleep. Pulling all-nighters for a big exam rarely pays off. Instead try to create your schedule for exam week in a way that leaves adequate sleep time. You wont do well on an exam if you are falling asleep while taking it. -Study with a partner. Misery loves company and this is never truer than during midterms and finals. Hopefully by the time midterms roll around you have found a study group that works. Study with your group or study partner to keep each other on schedule and motivated to work. -Dont panic. The whole world will not stop and does not end because of midterms and finals. If you did thy the pressure is getting to you, readjust your schedule to allow more break time and try to really relax during those breaks.
